What is brake fluid?
Your car’s brakes a critical part of its safety, and the fluid is what powers the brakes. The right brake fluid will ensure that your brakes work perfectly. However, since all cars use a slightly different system they also require a somewhat different grade of brake fluid. There are a couple of standard grades of this fluid which include DOT 3, 4, and DOT 5.1. The job of the brake fluid is to amplify the force exerted by the driver’s foot to stop or slow down the vehicle. The DOT or SAE rating of the fluid mainly refers to its mean ability to tolerate pressure.
When should the fluid be added?
Normally you wouldn’t need to top up the brake fluid of your vehicle. However, if there is a leak the level of fluid can go down and which reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of the brakes. When that happens its time to top up the brake fluid with the same grade as recommended by the car’s manufacturer. That said it would also be a good idea to get the brakes thoroughly examined by a certified mechanic to ensure that its leak free. Usually, the mechanic will recommend a complete overhaul of the braking system at which point the fresh brake fluid will be added.
